Honor Council 1982 - 2011
"Byte into E-Literacy"

In 1961 a handful of people had the vision to establish the Santa Clara County Reading Council. Today with a membership of 1,300, it is the largest council in California and one of the largest in the nation. Memorable program extensions have enriched its progress. The following dates chart the many wonderful events that have made SCCRC a highly esteemed professional organization.

How it all began:

1966 First Saturday Conference at Lynbrook High

School

Dr. Jo Stanchfield and Thor Johnson,

1971 Dr. Morton Botel, Keynote Speaker, IRA

Saturday Conference



1972 First Friday/Saturday Seminar at SCU



1974 Initiated dinner event meetings increasing

attendance up to 70 - 100



1975 Publication of first newsletter



1976 Joined with Santa Cruz, San Benito and

Monterey Councils to present the first Asilomar

Reading Conference



1978 First Young Authors' Faire



1983 Dr. Roger Farr, Keynote Speaker, at SCCRC&

1980's New program/activities initiated:

-Reading Day on the Mall

-Authors' Hall of Fame
